Part of the series Scaffolding series:
This collection focuses on the concept of scaffolding, both in the structural and the developmental sense. Scaffolding is supportive but not determinate. It doesn’t define, rather it provides a framework which offers many perspectives. I am interested in what holds us up: as an individual, as a community, and in our surroundings.
The heirloom paintings are reminiscent old, precious stones. Pieces of jewelry made from a rainbow of gems that carry tradition and history throughout generations. I am thinking of how mothers sewed their family jewels in the hem of their children’s clothing in terrible times such as the holocaust, hoping their value will protect their most precious lives. I am thinking of wearing my grandmother’s diamond watch at my wedding, and then again until my son’s bar mitzvah.
